The expert jury of the annual “World Car of the Year, WCOTY” competition has summed up the results of the 2022 voting. The winner in the main category was the electric Hyundai Ioniq 5, which had previously won a similar contest in Germany. In addition, the Korean crossover was the winner in two more prestigious categories. This year battery models won most of the nominations, as expected.
In the category “World Car of the Year” rivals Ioniq 5 were Ford Mustang Mach-E and Kia EV6, which took second place. The winner scored 815 points, while the runners-up scored 808 and 773, respectively. The battery-powered Hyundai was also named “Best Electric Car of the Year.” The crossover’s rivals in this category were the Audi e-Tron GT and Mercedes-Benz EQS. The Ioniq 5 won the third title in the Best Design category, where it managed to beat the same Audi e-Tron GT and Kia EV6.
“The best sports car of the year” the jury recognized the Audi e-Tron GT. The competitors of the model were BMW M3/M4, as well as Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR 86.
The Mercedes-Benz EQS won in the category “Best Premium Car”, beating the BMW iX by five points.
Voting for “Best City Car” was even more of a struggle. The winner of the nomination was the Toyota Yaris Cross, which beat the Opel Mokka by only one point. The Volkswagen Taigun rounded out the top three in this category.
In early March, the international competition “Woman’s Car of the Year” took place. The award winner was the Peugeot 308, which also won in the “best city car” category.
