At the Chengdu Motor Show, the premiere of the next Volkswagen crossover with the letter T took place – a large Tavendor SUV aimed at the Chinese market. The novelty is an analog of a shortened version of the Teramont X with an original design, however, if the Teramont X is produced at the facilities of the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture, then the Tavendor will be produced at the FAW-Volkswagen plant. In terms of dimensions, the Tavendor surpasses the Touareg, and the model is based on the MQB front-wheel-drive architecture with a transverse engine arrangement.
It is known that the Tavendor will be exclusively a five-seater, but already at the start of sales, they will offer a version of the R-Line, which is distinguished by a sporty decor. In the cabin, there are a couple of screens in a single case, an abundance of touch keys, and a miniature gearbox selector on the central tunnel.
Technically, Tavendor repeats Teramont for the Chinese market. The base engine is a two-liter “turbocharger” with a capacity of 186 horsepower, the drive is front. The alternative is the same engine but boosted to 220 forces, and such a crossover has already been put all-wheel drive.
In both cases, the unit is paired with a DSG “robot” with two clutches. It is expected that later there will be a more powerful modification with a 2.5-liter VR6 turbo engine with 299 forces, which is already familiar from Talagon and Teramont.
If we talk about dimensions, then the Tavendor and Teramont have the same distance between the axes, which is 2.98 meters, while the length of the novelty exceeds 4.9 meters – for comparison, the length of the Touareg is 4.87 meters.
The start of sales of new items is scheduled for the end of 2022. Volkswagen explained that the name of the model is made up of two Greek words, “Tavros” (“Taurus”) and “Esplendor” (“splendor”).
