On the Tesla Greater China YouTube channel, a video was published in which they demonstrated the process of “climbing” Everest. At the same time, Tesla Model X and Model Y electric cars acted as climbers. During the trip, which took more than five days and about 5,500 kilometers, two Chinese drivers managed to reach the base camp on Mount Everest, which is located at an altitude of 5,200 meters. Sometimes enthusiasts had to spend the night in electric cars.
According to the description, both electric cars received “some” modifications, the details of which the authors of the video do not give. At the same time, it is known that drivers spent five days on a route of 5,476 kilometers. During the trip, enthusiasts used the Tesla Supercharger charging network, which allowed them to maintain a stock of batteries throughout the journey.
During the trip, enthusiasts had to put the tires of electric cars in special metal chains for better grip on the icy road. In addition, drivers were forced to spend the night several times in the salons of cars with climate control turned on, which significantly discharged the batteries.
As a result, motorists reached the base camp of climbers at an altitude of 5,200 meters. Model X and Model Y became the first electric cars of the American brand to conquer Everest.
In 2020, Hyundai Kona got into the Guinness Book of Records for a similar “ascent”. The electric crossover obeyed the height of 5731 meters on a mountain in Tibet.
