The Japanese automaker may return to the small truck segment that was once dominated by Toyota Tacoma. Toyota considers the American Ford Maverick as the main competitor of its future model.

Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz marked the beginning of the compact pickup segment in modern history. The segment, which was long forgotten and forgotten in the last decade due to the widespread increase in the size of trucks, “came back to life” with the appearance of these two small pickups last year, giving Americans (it is in the US market pickups of different sizes are most popular) to recall their former love for smaller trucks.

In fact, these two models were sold as “hot cakes”, Santa Cruz was one of the fastest-selling cars last year. Meanwhile, Ford stopped taking orders for the Maverick earlier this year due to huge demand. Together, Maverick and Santa Cruz have sold 50,000 units since the beginning of the year.

“However, there is one automaker who is thinking about returning to the compact pickup segment in the United States – Toyota.”

Toyota Motor North America senior vice president of automotive operations Jack Hollis said there was “room” in Toyota’s midsize Tacoma lineup. “The question is, how do I fill it out?”

Hollis added that Toyota “kept looking” at the compact truck segment, “and we kept looking for ways to introduce a car to it for a long time.”
