Pecco Bagnaia and Fabio Quartararo have reached the finish line! The Malaysian Grand Prix was not a decisive stage: each of the contenders for the MotoGP title did everything possible to achieve their goals. And Quarararo managed to delay Ducati’s coronation. Several Ducati pilots at once “prevented” Pecco Bagnaia from calmly dominating the decisive race of the season. Jorge Martin and Enea Bastianini closely guarded the Bagnaia but eventually retreated. Jorge Martin took off on lap 7 from the leader’s position, and Bastianini did not counterattack the Ducati leader when he broke into the leader’s position. Bagnaia was allowed to finish calmly and score such an important 25 points for winning in Sepang!
But Quarararo did a great job, breaking through from behind his rivals into the leadership group. Fabio started 12th in this race. The Yamaha pilot managed to gain a foothold in the TOP 5 on the second lap, get an attack on Marc Marquez and drive most of the race in 4th place. If Fabio had finished like that, Bagnaia would have become the champion here and now.
Martin’s descent literally helped Quartararo, who finished the race on the podium. It should also be noted the actions of Marquez: in the middle of the race, the Repsol Honda Pilot did not oppose Quarararo, as he could and as he usually does. So… “help” was still provided.
Having earned 16 points, Cuartararo postponed the coronation of Bagnaia and Ducati: the difference between them at the finish was 9 points, which was not enough for an early victory.
Of course, we can say that the game is played, and Ducati finally got everything. But a small chance for a miracle remains! Quartararo can win the Valencia Grand Prix, and Bagnaia can drop out of the bout at an unexpected moment… But this situation has been developing throughout the second half of the 2022 season!
A fundamental change in the MotoGP championship still happened: Enea Bastianini caught up and equaled Aleix Espargaro in the general classification! Thanks to the podium, Enea jumped Aprilia into the TOP 3 of the championship (Aleix finished only 10th in the race).
After Sepang, the position in the 2022 MotoGP Championship is as follows:
- Pecco Bagnaia (Ducati) – 258 points
- Fabio Quarararo (Yamaha) – 235 (-23)
- Enea Bastianini (Ducati) – 211 (-47)
- Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia) – 211 (-47)
- Jack Miller (Ducati) – 189 (-69)
