Named «eternal» cars: they will travel over 200,000 kilometers 1

The French edition of Largus studied the data on the inspection of cars for 2021 and compiled a rating of the most reliable models. There was one criterion: the number of cars with a mileage of more than 200 thousand kilometers. Unexpectedly, the first six places in the list were taken by cars of local brands, but there are also Volkswagen, Audi, and even BMW on the list. At the same time, more often the mileage over two hundred thousand kilometers was recorded at Peugeot 307 — there were about 150 thousand such cars last year.

According to the French certification organization Union Technique de l’Automobile, Motorcycle et Cycle (UTAC), almost 22 percent of the cars that passed the inspection in 2021 had a mileage of more than 200 thousand kilometers, and 27 percent were over 15 years old. The newspaper L’argus studied the UTAC records and compiled a list of the 25 most reliable cars. Contrary to popular opinion about the low quality of the “French”, the first six places in it were occupied by cars of local brands: Peugeot 307, 306, Renault Clio II/III, Citroen Xsara Picasso, and Peugeot 207.

They are followed by Volkswagen Golf V, Golf VI, Golf Plus, Jetta V, and Eos. Completing the top ten are Renault Scenic II, Volkswagen Golf IV, Jetta IV, Bora and Citroen C4 Picasso I. Then, in descending order of the number of cars with a mileage of more than 200 thousand kilometers, there are Citroen C3 I, Peugeot 308 I, Renault Megane II, Volkswagen Touran I and Caddy III, Peugeot 407, Citroen C4 I, Audi A3 II, Citroen Berlingo I, Renault Scenic I, Peugeot 306, Peugeot 406, Renault Megane III, Renault Kangoo I, BMW 3 Series (E46) and Renault Scenic III.

The tendency to prolong the life of old cars, the publication L’argus associates primarily with the rise in prices. Most French people simply cannot change their car, and besides, they believe that buying a car with mileage is preferable from the point of view of ecology. The idea of “planned obsolescence” does not find support even among young people under the age of 35: they oppose subsidies for the purchase of new cars and the introduction of so-called low-emission zones.

Interestingly, just a few days ago, the CarBuzz website compiled a list of the most reliable cars. However, it is based on personal observations rather than statistical data. The first place in the ranking is occupied by the 1992 Toyota Camry, which has long earned itself a reputation as an ultra-reliable car. Also on the list are the Honda Accord, Volkswagen Beetle, Ford Crown Victoria, and other equally popular models in the New World.
