Maverick Vinales moved to Aprilia Racing MotoGP in the middle of the 2021 season, after an unexpected and shocking parting with the Yamaha factory team. Then, he lost faith in himself and in technique, but the faith in the Spaniard that Massimo Rivola had was enough for them all. Vinales jumped on the bedside table for the first time at the TT Circuit Assen and became the 2nd in Silverstone… Ready to try to win the Red Bull Ring!!
The outcome of Vinales’ battle with the Bagnaia in the last laps of the BritishGP was more or less a foregone conclusion. Pekko had every chance to beat Aprilia and finish the race as the winner. But Maverick didn’t give up. He admitted after the race that he was going to the finish line at the limit, but as long as the chance to take a debut victory remained, he tried to realize it.
Unlike the “stock” bike of Aleix Espargaro, the Aprilia RS-GP Vinales is prepared according to an individual project. The geometry, the fit, the design of the tank, the seat, even the suspension (clips, footrests, etc.) – everything is different. And Vinales’ style is different because he is physically built differently.
“We drive completely differently, but our telemetry data is very similar – our motorcycles react similarly,” said Maverick Vinales, talking to Spanish journalists after returning from the UK. – Aleix has a lot tied up in braking, and I have a lot tied up at the exit of turns. I think these two aspects are very important for Romano Albesiano, technical director of Aprilia Racing and developer of RS-GP.”
Vinales is significantly lower than Aleix, so the geometry of his RS-GP is significantly different. But when they sit down with their engineers, Albesiano is pleased to note that the reviews of both pilots agree on many points.
Last year I rode the Aleix motorcycle, but in 2022 all the elements are made according to my own project. And this allowed us to find some details that could be improved on both motorcycles. Because Aprilia is always there and always attentive, which is important because they always try to make the bike as comfortable as possible so that it works 100%, adds Vinales.
“When I first switched from Yamaha to Aprilia, I was shocked – a fundamentally different bike. But I saw great potential in him, which Aleix has already begun to reveal.”
“Vinales has two podiums in his pocket, and he intends to achieve more before the end of the 2022 season: “The next step is to go to victory. This is the main goal of Aprilia and our entire team – to try to win races. We have the speed. We have excellent handling and balance. There are details that need to be finalized so that the podium potential becomes every day. But Aleix already has it, so it remains for me to catch up. Let’s see how we can reveal the updated Red Bull Ring! Maybe that’s where I’ll be able to do 3-2-1.”
