Interview with Pecco Bagnaia after the Australian Grand Prix — The real MotoGP has begun! 1

Pecco Bagnaia is a unique MotoGP: for 8 races he earned 105 points, getting out of the critical blockage by -91 points to +14! None of the current riders of the Royal Class made such a breakthrough. What are your plans for the next couple of races? Calm down and exhale to prepare for the final fight.

Francesco Bagnaia is Ducati’s main bet in the battle for the Triple Crown. He fully revealed his talent in August 2021, and since then has rapidly gone uphill. But, of course, the Distance’Inya and Ciabatti saw something in Pecco… 3 years ago. Their common dream began to come true on Phillip Island!

Pecco, you don’t look good enough… happy. Why?

Francesco Bagnaia: “For two reasons. If I had won the race, my advantage would have reached 23 points over Quarararo, not 14. I like to win, especially at races like this, with full stands!.. Well, and the second thing is that I’ve been sleeping for 8 hours these couple of days, so now I’m already slightly pupated.”

Was it necessary to take a risk for the sake of victory?

Francesco Bagnaia: “Yes, the objective task was to win. The team showed me on the pit board that Fabio had crashed, and from that moment I should have been smarter. I was in the lead when it happened. But the race is long, the last laps were more important. The tires began to give up, and on the last lap, Rins and Marquez passed me at the entrance to turn 2. I decided: I’ll wait for the moment; if it comes, I’ll take a chance… But to be honest, I didn’t want to take any chances before the finish.”

Were there any doubts before the start? Choice of rubber?

Francesco Bagnaia: “Oh yes. We decided at the last moment. But I thought I wouldn’t be able to warm up Hard, so I decided to take Medium. In the last 6 laps, the tire completely “ran out” – that’s what I didn’t expect! We achieved very good results on FP4, but the race is another matter, the race is much more aggressive.”

On Phillip Island, we saw a real MotoGP: outwardly, it was a desperate race, from start to finish consisting of solid action; in fact, everyone drove it extremely prudently, thinking through the steps, taking into account the risks…

“This race – it all consisted solely of calculations and control; I knew that if I went 1:29, I would simply not reach the finish line. It seems that the others decided the same way. The pace of the race was an order of magnitude lower than usual”

How do you feel after the jump from -91 to +14?

Francesco Bagnaia: “Having done such a great job, I would like to expect such a result. And, of course, achieving it is a great satisfaction for me and the team. I have already said that such chambers are practically impossible. But we also knew we couldn’t give up.”

Casey Stoner stayed all weekend in the paddock, including in Ducati… Did you talk to him before the race? Did he give you any useful advice?

Francesco Bagnaia: “Not this time. But I’m sure he would have told me something if he saw that I was acting incorrectly.”

You are going to Sepang. What’s the plan for the next two races?

Francesco Bagnaia: “Well, I think Sepang is great for Ducati – a lot of tight turns and braking. We can have our say. And then we’ll see… The main thing is not to make a big mistake – not to think about trying to take the title ahead of schedule. We need to think from session to session.”
