In 2023, the Italian Ferrari brand will replace its “most successful racing cars” in history — a new 296 GT3 will replace the 488 GT3 and 488 GT3 Evo coupes on the racetrack. In accordance with the technical regulations, the aerodynamics, as well as the power plant were modified. In addition, changes were made to the body structure and suspension architecture — as a result, the Ferrari 296 GT3 racing sports car received a number of quite significant differences from its road prototype.
Visually, the GT3 version is distinguished by a developed aerodynamic body kit, which allowed to increase downforce not only in comparison with the base 296 GTB but also relative to racing predecessors — by 20%. The interior has also been improved, which provides optimal visibility and accessibility of all controls, some of which are placed on a multifunctional steering wheel. A Sabelt racing seat with multipoint seat belts is installed, as well as a number of other mandatory equipment for racing.
It is stated that the adjustable pedal assembly and steering wheel will allow you to find the optimal landing for pilots of any height, and the air conditioning system provides a comfortable temperature during many hours of racing. The 296 GT3 is built around an all-new aluminum chassis, which features an enlarged, relative to the road coupe, wheelbase, redesigned adjustable suspension on double wishbones, and adjustable stabilizer bars.
The coupe received new, more productive braking mechanisms, and Rotiform developed new wheels for Ferrari by design. The main change was the power plant. The road Ferrari 296 GTB is equipped with a V6 3.0 turbo engine, supplemented by an MGU-K electric motor with a total output of 830 horsepower and 740 Nm of torque, but the GT3 regulations do not allow the use of petrol-electric units, so the 296 GT3 became the first racing Ferrari with a V6 engine for many years. The location of the engine, which produces 600 forces and 710 Nm, was changed for a racing car, and its internal characteristics were also optimized to increase power and reliability.
The motor is combined with a 6-speed sequential Xtrac gearbox with an electric shift drive and electronic clutch actuation using a steering lobe. As noted in Ferrari, the 296 GT3 has already passed tens of thousands of kilometers in tests, and the racing debut of the novelty is scheduled for January 2023 — for the first time, the Ferrari 296 GT3 competition will perform in the marathon “24 hours of Daytona” in the USA in the Pro class.
