Founded by Baidu and Geely, JiDU has unveiled its first model — the Robo-01 electric crossover. It is packed to the brim with advanced technologies, including an autopilot with two leaders, an external voice interaction system, and headlights with artificial intelligence. The Robocar media system runs on the fourth-generation Snapdragon platform and is equipped with 3D navigation and a voice assistant that does not need access to an external database.

The JiDU startup was created in April last year by the IT company Baidu (55%) and the Geely holding (45%) with the aim of developing and manufacturing “smart electric vehicles”. The new “daughter” got all the achievements of Baidu in the field of artificial intelligence and network services, as well as the SEA platform, which cost Geely $2.5 billion.

The firstborn of this cooperation is the Robo—01 crossover, which demonstrates a new generation of cars of the Intelligent Car 3.0 era. The electric car uses so-called actively deformable structures, that is, elements of varying degrees of mobility. These include retractable Lidars on the hood (they are controlled by artificial intelligence), a ROBOWing lifting rear wing, a folding U-shaped steering wheel, lifting satellite speakers, and adaptive Zero Gravity seat headrests.

The Robo-01 automated control system uses an open Baidu Apollo platform with two Nvidia Orin X chips and 31 sensors. In addition to two Lidars, there are five-millimeter radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and 12 cameras. Electronics automatically adapt to one of three driving scenarios (motorway, city, and parking), recognize traffic lights, bypass obstacles, and drive in and out of the highway.

Of course, all modern technologies are implemented in Robo-01: steering “by wire”, high-speed 5G communication, C-V2X protocol, and updates “over the air”. The car is 90 percent consistent with the production car and, according to preliminary information, will go on sale next year. The crossover will be produced at the Geely facilities.
