National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) The USA reports that the Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickup truck has become the most stolen car in America in 2021.
The Bureau found 48,206 statements about the theft of a pickup truck last year, and most often the hijackers were interested in the 2004 model. The second most popular among local car owners was a full-size Ford pickup truck – 47,999 hijackings. Previously, this pickup belonged to the leadership in the rating.
Recall that the Ford model was the most stolen car in America in 2020 and 2019. Interestingly, it is pickups that interest American hijackers the most. Chevrolet, Ford, and GMC pickups accounted for 14 percent of all cars stolen in America in 2021, experts summarize.
The third on this list was the Honda Civic sedan – 31,673 thefts. A step away from the top three, the Honda Accord stopped – 30,274 stolen cars.
The Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee joined the pickups and sedans in the list, appearing for the first time in the TOP 10 of the NICB list. Last year, there were 12,210 reports of thefts. However, unlike most of the other models on the list, the most popular model year among thieves was 2018. Also, on this list are the Nissan Altima and Toyota Corolla.
The interest of car thieves in older models is explained by the lack of modern security systems.
The bureau reports that almost a million cars were stolen in America last year, which is eight percent more than in 2020.
“The cost of used cars is at a historic high,” said David Glau, president, and CEO of NICB. “Over the past two years, we have seen an increase in the cost of used cars by almost 35% due to supply chain problems and inflation. Stolen cars can be shipped abroad and resold or disassembled for valuable used auto parts here in the USA.”
