The alliance of Changan, Huawei, and CATL announced itself last fall. Their joint company Avatar Technology Co. will produce only electric cars and relatively expensive and advanced ones at that. Changan is responsible for the comprehensive development of the cars, and the design is handled by the company’s studio in Munich. Huawei has provided its multimedia and online technology integrated into the brand’s overall ecosystem, while CATL is responsible for the traction batteries and related components.
The first model of the new brand was a coupe-like crossover: it was presented in November as a concept car called Avatar 11. Now the serial version is ready – already under the name Avatar 011. There are practically no visible differences from the concept, but key characteristics are revealed.
This is not a five-door liftback, as you might think based on the body profile. The Chinese have developed a four-door fastback: the rear window is set vertically, and a separate lid leads to the trunk. In terms of dimensions, the Avatar 011 is close to the BMW X6: length – 4,880 mm, width – 1,970 mm, height – 1,601 mm. It has frameless doors and a panoramic roof with a rigid lintel between the two sections. The wheelbase is 2975 mm.
The interior is declassified. The front panel has an unusual architecture with the body of the subwoofer, which is installed in the center behind the screen of the media system and has the shape of a “volcano”. In front of the driver and passenger are the same screens. There are no physical buttons either on the front panel or on the steering wheel, and the central tunnel is equipped with three platforms for wireless charging of smartphones at once.
The crossover is built on a new modular platform CHN and is equipped with two electric motors (one on each axle) with a total capacity of 578 hp, and the electrical system has a working voltage of 750 volts. Li-ion traction battery capacity is 90.4 kWh, the claimed range on a single charge is 600 km, and the company promises that the next modification will have 700 km. The DC charger has a capacity of 240 kW.
The separate pride of the developers is the autopilot, which has three lidars, six-millimeter radar, twelve ultrasonic sensors, and thirteen cameras. The central processor has a performance of 400 tops (trillion operations per second). However, it is not yet clear what level of autonomy this complex corresponds to.
On the Chinese market, the Avatar will appear in the third quarter, but the price has not yet been announced. The first model to go on sale will be the Avatar 011 MMW, allegedly created in collaboration with Givenchy’s creative director, Matthew M. Williams, whose initials are in the title. But the main feature of this special edition is an all-black decor on the body and interior. 500 crossovers in the MMW version will be produced, after which regular cars will go on sale.
