No one is surprised by armored SUVs and limousines, but wealthy people who fear for their lives, drive other cars – for example, sports cars. Demand breeds supply and powerful protected cars appear on sale. It would seem that this approach destroys the very idea of sports models: their dynamics deteriorate and their weight increases. However, manufacturers are looking for a solution to this problem, using lightweight materials and boosting engines. As a result, armored cars sometimes turn out to be even faster than the original ones.

Aston Martin Vantage

Recently, the AddArmor company from Jackson (Wyoming, USA) equipped the British coupe with B4-level protection and stun guns in the door handles.

Two quintals of Kevlar and high-strength windows will allow the two-door to save its passengers from automatic weapons fire. The roof and the gas tank were protected with hardened steel, and Kevlar was chosen because of its low weight so that the car does not become too heavy.

Door handles are equipped with stun guns, activated from the cabin by pressing a special button. The exhaust ducts are equipped with special pads so that no foreign objects can be placed inside.

Ferrari 458 Speciale

Earlier the company worked on the Italian supercar: externally the coupe is almost the same as the original, but it is equipped with B4 level protection. The Anti-Intrusion Protection set includes multi-layer composite plates in the doors: according to the creators, the material is ten times stronger and 60 percent lighter than steel armor.

The standard glass panes are replaced by the laminated glass with a thickness of not less than 20 millimeters, created on the basis of acrylic and polycarbonate. Armor weighs the car by 70 kilograms, but part of this excess can be compensated by optional body parts made of carbon fiber and lightweight Capristo exhaust: then the difference with the stock coupe will be only 30 kilograms.

Audi RS7 Sportback

The German Liftback is 91 kilograms heavier than the original, but 0.8 seconds faster than it when accelerating to 100 kilometers per hour. Giving out four-liter V8 increased from 605 to 760 horsepower (torque – 1085 Nm), getting “hundred” takes 2.9 seconds instead of the standard 3.7, and the maximum speed has reached 325 kilometers per hour.

The Americans equipped the car with concealed pepper spray, microphones, and speakers outside and inside, smoke screen, blinding headlights, stun guns in the door handles, mine and explosive device detection, 360-degree night vision, gas masks, filtered air tanks, and safe tires that can withstand cuts and other damages.

The company again used a polycarbonate material rather than ballistic steel, which is ten times stronger and 60 percent lighter. The improvements cost $91,000, and the finished car cost $205,000.

Tesla Model S

Another U.S. firm, Armormax, several years ago protected the Tesla Model S in the powerful P100D version from large-caliber rifle fire. The roof, doors, uprights, and floor were reinforced with heat-treated ballistic alloy and laminated synthetic fiber.

The vehicle became a quarter of a ton heavier: its weight reached 2,289 kilograms. Two motors gave a total of 773 hp and 967 Nm. It took 2.6 seconds to reach the first “a hundred” and the top speed reached 250 kilometers per hour.

Dodge Charger Hellcat

The same company protected this powerful B7 sedan from 7.62 caliber fire and underbody grenades.

A police ram was added with flashing beacons, bulletproof windows, Run Flat tires, and protection of the gas tank, battery, engine, radiator, and electronic engine control unit. The intercom and gas protection, which prevents air intake from the outside, are also available.

The powertrain is standard: 6.2-liter “eight” produces 717 horsepower and 881 Nm. All-wheel drive and reinforced suspension because of the increased weight. Stock rear-wheel-drive sedan climbs “a hundred” in 3.7 seconds and accelerates to a maximum of 328 kilometers per hour. Nothing is said about the dynamics of the armored car.

Porsche 911

Armored supercars are created not only by tuners but also by carmakers. For example, the company Porsche 1997 experimented with a 911 Carrera coupe of the 996 generation. Germans envied competitors from Mercedes-Benz, which produced various armored cars in the 90s.

The car withstood fire from a .44 Magnum revolver: it corresponds approximately to the level of protection B4. In addition, the sports car has excellent noise insulation.
