2023 Lexus RX of the new, fifth-generation debuted in the USA today. It moved to the GA-K platform and lost a six-cylinder engine (now only four-cylinder units are in the range), but it received a new hybrid modification with the ability to charge from an outlet.

Lexus RX has been on the market for more than 20 years — during this time it has changed four generations and sold 3.5 million copies worldwide.

With the transition to the GA-K platform, the crossover got a new multi-link rear suspension instead of the previous McPherson struts, and the center of gravity became lower. The engineers managed to maintain a balance between strength and lightness: the body was made more rigid, increasing the percentage of use of high-strength steel, while aluminum is still used. Thus, for the first time in the world, a high-strength steel sheet was used in the central rack (the elements are hot-stamped), and the front fenders and hood are made of aluminum. As a result, the “fifth” RX turned out to be 90 kilograms lighter than its predecessor.

The design of RX is designed in the brand’s new corporate style. Its characteristic features include a frameless radiator grille, smoothly passing into the body — this visual effect was achieved due to unusual “fake” honeycombs on top. The body itself was made more streamlined, without the previous sharp edges, but at the same time, the RX retained a rapid profile with a falling roof.

The interior is also designed in a new design concept called Tazuna: the management of all the functions of the car is centered around the driver. The main innovation was the appearance of the touch screen of the multimedia system, slightly turned towards the driver — the touchpad on the central tunnel was finally abandoned. The diagonal of the display is 9.8 or 14 inches, depending on the configuration, and the multimedia itself began to work 3.6 times faster. Other innovations include a new joystick for controlling the transmission and a salon mirror with a screen on which the image from the rear camera is displayed. However, you will have to pay extra for the latter.

With the change of generation, the Lexus RX has grown slightly in size, in particular, it has received an increase in the wheelbase — the distance between the axles has increased by six centimeters. This increase allowed to increase the legroom of the rear passengers and make the trunk more spacious. The company does not cite its volume, but they note that the internal length has increased by five centimeters, and now four suitcases with a volume of 77 liters each or four 240-centimeter golf bags are placed in the compartment.

For the new RX, a set of Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 auxiliary systems has been announced, which includes adaptive cruise control and a driver status tracking function, supplemented with emergency braking: if the “smart” system recognizes that the driver has lost consciousness or fallen asleep, the car will automatically stop. In addition, e-Latch electric locks have been introduced on the RX, which are already used on the NX — in order to open the doors from the inside, you need to press the handle, and not pull the handle, as usual (although mechanical door unlocking is also provided).

The fifth-generation model will be presented in four versions: RX350, RX350h, RX450h+, and RX500h, and the last three are electrified. The base engine is a 2.4-liter “turbocharger” with a return of 279 horsepower of 430 Nm of torque. It works in tandem with an eight-band automatic, and the drive can be front or full. The all-wheel-drive RX350 accelerates from a standstill to 100 kilometers per hour in 7.1 seconds, which is a whole second faster than the previous RX with a 299-horsepower six-cylinder engine.

The RX350h is a “parallel hybrid”: a 2.5—liter gasoline “atmospheric engine” works with an electric motor and an electromechanical Variator. The total power is 249 horsepower, and the torque is 316 Nm. The drive is front or full (in the second case, an additional electric motor is installed on the rear axle — the E-Four system). The four-wheel-drive hybrid gains a “hundred” in eight seconds.

The RX450h+ version appeared for the first time. This is a rechargeable hybrid with all-wheel drive E-Four and more powerful electric motors: the total output is 306 horsepower. Such a crossover is equipped with a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 18.1 kilowatt-hours, which provides it with a 65-kilometer power reserve on electricity alone. Such a hybrid accelerates from a place to “hundreds” in seven seconds and it can be charged from an outlet.

The RX500his another “parallel hybrid”, but with a Direct4 system. It has a 2.4-liter gasoline engine, a six-band automatic, and a separate electric motor on the rear axle. The peak output of the hybrid system is 371 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque. This RX will be available only in the F Sport Performance sports version, with a full-control chassis and six-piston brakes. It is also the most dynamic in the range — it takes only six seconds to accelerate to 100 kilometers per hour, but charging from an outlet for the RX500h is not provided.

The fourth-generation crossover has been in service since 2015, and the new RX will go on sale before the end of 2022: the RX350, RX350h, and RX500h are scheduled to appear in the fall, and the RX450h+ rechargeable hybrid will have to wait.
